Adding a Higher Level of Security

Oct 30, 2018

As business owners and managers, you know the importance of keeping your business running efficiently.  There are so many factors to consider: Inventory, Cost, Merchandising, Advertising, Overhead, Fixed Costs, and the list goes on. What about security?

What Deters Burglars

Most security professionals will say that installing surveillance cameras on the outside of your business is an effective method of deterring criminals from choosing you as a target.  In 2012, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte conducted a study entitled “Understanding Decisions to Burglarize from the Offender’s Perspective.” Over 400 incarcerated male and female burglars were asked a series of questions regarding how they chose a target, what motivation they had for burglary, and their experience with the effectiveness of alarm and security camera systems.  The University’s study was quite revealing.

According to the results, a significant majority of the participants were influenced by the presence of security systems. Roughly 83% of the offenders reported trying to determine if there was an alarm system before pursuing a target, and over 60% said that such a system would cause them to choose another target.  If the burglar noticed surveillance cameras or triggered an audible alarm after they had begun the attempt, 50% of offenders said that they would discontinue the robbery; 37% said that they sometimes still went through with the burglary; and only the remaining 13% said they always continued with the attempt.

Taking Additional Steps to Secure Your Business

Security alarm and camera systems are fine for a brick-and-mortar building, but what if your facility is in a remote location, has a large lot with fencing, or is an open construction site with equipment and materials?  Installing cameras (and lighting) around the perimeter could be costly. This is where it is most beneficial to have on-site Security Officers.

Security Officers provide more than just remote videoing of a potential crime, or acting as evidence after a crime has been committed.  Skilled Security Personnel are able to utilize training and intuition to anticipate potential security threats not readily seen by an automated security system.  Additionally, their presence implements a regimen of checks and balances to ensure security.  Some of those responsibilities include:

  • Act as a visual deterrent against vandalism, theft and trespasser;
  • Patrol the grounds/building by foot or by vehicle;
  • Secure building doors and/or windows;
  • Enforce regulations;
  • Entry & Exit access control;
  • Report suspicious activity and/or hazardous conditions;
  • Act as a first responder in emergencies;
  • Alert staff or police when necessary; and
  • Submit daily and/or incident reports.

We Believe...

Relationships are built…one on one.
Know your people - match interest and talents to the tasks.
Don’t manage by numbers. (They just show if we’re on track.) People do the work.
People should feel better when they leave than when they came – and in turn we feel better.
When we help others, we help ourselves.
Great expectations: fair pay, fair treatment, teach me.
Have fun…and be better.
Work at having fun (51% of the time.) If you don’t feel it, fake it. Having fun is not slacking off. Work is more natural than play.
