Safety: Your Company’s Backbone

It begins at the top

Safety begins at the top, of course, but unless you establish it, teach it, live it at every level, your company will most likely suffer from lack of it. As the saying goes, “safety doesn’t happen by accident!”

Accidents in the workplace always cost. At minimum, it involves downtime, but it can have extensive, long-term financial consequences involving equipment repair and replacement. Much more important than material loss, workplace accidents can result in devastating injuries, including some with lifetime consequences, and in worst case scenario, fatalities.

Taking a proactive stance is crucial. If your company hasn’t adopted the following standards, it’s time to do it.

Hire Competent Staff: Employers are liable for any negligence that results in accidents/injuries - including employee negligence. Take due diligence to hire staff who not only have the relevant skills and experience but also manifest a safety-conscious attitude.  Don’t stop there.

  • Train staff: Training should be a continuous process rather than a one-off occurrence. Beginning with top management, bring everyone on board with training, including consistent refresher courses.
  • Encourage feedback: Keep an open-door policy when it comes to safety. Encourage employees to not only be safety conscious but also to speak up when they have concerns.
  • Provide positive reinforcement: From acknowledging and expressing appreciation for proactive safety among employees to offering performance-based awards, positive reinforcement encourages employees to take ownership of their safety, as well as the overall company safety.
  • Maintain sufficient support staff: During peak seasons or heavy vacation times, overworked staff can become tired and more prone to accidents. Hiring adequate support staff keeps everyone at optimum performance and safety.

Conduct Thorough Risk Assessments: This is crucial. Whether you schedule it monthly, quarterly or semi-annually, assessing equipment, physical workspaces, storage areas, etc. will help identify and correct potential hazards.  

  • Inspect and Maintain Equipment: Ensure that inspections are conducted by qualified personnel. If your situation doesn’t require on-staff personnel, outsource them. Don’t forget the company vehicles.
  • Evaluate work practices: This will help to minimize the risk of avoidable injuries. Be sure to include the correct use of PPE in your evaluation.
  • Provide and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE): Go beyond the legal requirements – investing proactively in PPE will save ultimately save cost in the end.
  • Practice Good housekeeping: Messy, disorganized workplaces are more prone to accidents. Keep walkways free of potential trip hazards, clean up spills promptly, and maintain adequate, organized storage.
  • Don’t overlook the small stuff: Issues proactively dealt with when they’re minor rarely become accidents.

Ultimately, safety is the result of careful attention to all operations by those who are directly and indirectly involved. Everyone, from the owner to employee from the highest level to the lowest, must be diligent in following safety protocol and practices. As Ben Franklin so aptly said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
