Are You Prepared For Hurricane Season?

Hurricane season is upon us, running from June 1st to November 30th, so it’s time to get prepared. While hurricanes pose the greatest threat to life and property, tropical storms and depressions also can be devastating, causing flooding from heavy rains. Severe weather, such as tornadoes, can cause extensive damage and loss of life. The primary hazards are storm surge flooding, inland flooding from heavy rains, destructive winds, tornadoes, and high surf and rip currents.

According to NOAA, there is a 65% chance of above-average tropical cyclone activity in 2022 with an outlook of 14-21 named storms, 3-6 of which could be major storms.  Now is the time to check your supplies to add essential items you may need due to a hurricane including:

  • Clear the exterior of light-weight objects, such as garbage cans, garden tools, toys and lawn furniture.
  • If you have a trampoline, turn over (tarp facing the ground) and secure with deep stakes.
  • Cover up windows and doors. Use storm shutters or nail pieces of plywood to the outside window frames.
  • Bring pets inside.
  • Prepare a supply kit, including batteries, flashlights, first aid kit, portable radio, non-perishable food, and several days’ water supply as power may be affected.
  • Gather important documents, including passports, wills, personal identification, insurance, etc.
  • If using a gas powered generator, check the oil and fuel. Test in advance to make sure it runs.
  • Keep plenty of gas on hand – store in a well ventilated area. NEVER inside the home.
  • Pick-up or refill prescription medications.
  • Have plenty of cash on hand.
  • Re-fuel all vehicles and move to higher ground or into a garage.
  • Plan an evacuation route in advance, and have an alternate place to go if told local shelters are not available.
  • NEVER drive through flooded areas. As little as six inches of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

After the hurricane or tropical storm is over, keep listening to the radio or television for instructions. To stay prepared, log onto the National Hurricane Center’s website at www.nhc.noaa.gov and download the Tropical Cyclone Preparedness Guide.

We Believe...

Relationships are built…one on one.
Know your people - match interest and talents to the tasks.
Don’t manage by numbers. (They just show if we’re on track.) People do the work.
People should feel better when they leave than when they came – and in turn we feel better.
When we help others, we help ourselves.
Great expectations: fair pay, fair treatment, teach me.
Have fun…and be better.
Work at having fun (51% of the time.) If you don’t feel it, fake it. Having fun is not slacking off. Work is more natural than play.
